What is a Charter Oak?
Nestled amongst four local education agencies at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains stands the Charter Oak Unified School District which has been serving students, families, businesses and community members since 1894 in the cities of Covina, Glendora and San Dimas. What started as a one room schoolhouse has blossomed into a destination district that serves 6000 students in one high school, one middle school, five elementary schools and an alternative education center. Like the mighty oak, Charter Oak has roots of tradition in academic progress and extracurricular successes; a trunk of core values based on a sturdy dedication and investment in students; and branches of community outreach that stretch beyond the classroom walls.
Charter Oak has been a symbol of academic excellence for decades with the past few years offering a spike of success including some of the highest API gains in all of Los Angeles County, the continuance of the first International Baccalaureate Diploma program, and numerous distinguished schools. It is also home to a model continuation high school and a comprehensive high school named as one of the top 1500 High Schools in the United States of America.
Charter Oak has also become a destination for co-curricular opportunities as students and community members participate in sports, music, band and theater arts. It is home to five CIF Football Championships since 1985, a CIF Baseball Championship, countless league title winners, and a flourishing intramural sports program at the middle school. Performing artists enjoy a BRAVO Award winning theater, choirs that perform in multiple languages, and a band program in grades 4-12 that has garnered awards at competitions around the State of California. Partnerships with the cities of Covina and Glendora offer recreation activities to community members of all ages utilizing each and every school site.
